How to Get Pokémon Cards Graded in Australia (PSA, CGC, BGS, TAG)

Got a card you think could be a PSA 10? Grading is how you prove it. A professional grader checks your card is genuine, scores its condition out of 10 and seals it in a tamper-proof slab. For collectors in Australia, there's one catch: the big graders are overseas. This guide explains how card grading works from Australia, which company to choose, what it costs and how to submit your cards through PWA TCG in Melbourne.

What is card grading?

A grading company inspects your card's centering, corners, edges and surface, then gives it a grade, usually on a 1–10 scale. The card goes into a sealed, labelled holder (a "slab") with a certification number anyone can look up online. A graded card is:

  • Authenticated, so buyers know it's real.
  • Protected from bends, scratches and handling.
  • Easier to sell, because the condition is no longer a matter of opinion. High grades, especially 10s, often sell for well above raw copies.

Is it worth grading your card?

Before you book a slot, do a quick sum: what does the card sell for raw, what does it sell for at the grade you realistically expect, and is the difference bigger than the grading fee plus return postage? Grading usually makes sense for:

  • Chase cards from modern sets (illustration rares, special art rares, alt arts)
  • Vintage holos and 1st Edition cards
  • Cards with personal value you want to protect for the long term
  • Japanese cards and promos in very clean condition

Check your card under a bright light first. Whitening on the back edges, off-centre borders, surface scratches or print lines will all pull the grade down.

PSA vs CGC vs Beckett vs TAG vs ARK: which should you choose?

Grader Best for With PWA TCG
PSA The most recognised name for Pokémon. PSA 10s usually carry the strongest resale prices. From $65 AUD per card
CGC Good value for TCG cards, with clear holders and a half-point scale. Grades Pokémon cards in all languages. From $35 AUD per card
Beckett (BGS) Subgrades for centering, corners, edges and surface. Black Labels are highly sought after. From $55 AUD per card
TAG Technology-based grading with a detailed condition report for eligible modern cards. From $65 AUD per card
ARK A budget option with subgrades included. From $25 AUD per card

Simple rule: if you plan to sell, PSA is the safe default for Pokémon. If you want the lowest cost per card, look at CGC or ARK. If you want detailed subgrades, choose Beckett or TAG. Compare every option and current price on our grading services page.

How to pack cards for grading

  • Put each card in a clean penny sleeve, then a semi-rigid card holder (often called a card saver). Most graders prefer these over top loaders.
  • Don't use tape on the card holders.
  • Pack the holders snugly in a sturdy box or padded mailer so nothing slides around.
  • Include your order number and contact details.

Need supplies? We stock penny sleeves, semi-rigid holders and top loaders.

How much does card grading cost in Australia?

The price per card depends on the grading company, how fast you want it back and how much the card is worth. Higher-value cards need a higher service level. At the time of writing, PWA TCG prices start at $25 AUD (ARK Economy), $35 AUD (CGC Bulk) and $65 AUD (PSA Value) per card. See the grading services page for current prices.

Return options are free pickup in store, $12.50 standard post or $16.50 express with signature. Return postage is invoiced when your slabs are ready.

What is an upcharge?

Each service level covers cards up to a set value. If your card grades well and is worth more than that limit, the grading company may charge the difference to move it to the right level. The grader decides this, not us. Choosing a service that matches your card's expected graded value avoids surprises.

How long does grading take?

Turnaround depends on the service you choose, from about 10–15 business days for PSA Super Express to around 120 business days for value services. The grader's estimate usually starts when they receive your cards, so allow extra time for preparation, international shipping and customs. Turnaround times are estimates, not guaranteed return dates. Already submitted? Check Track My Grading or email grading@pwatcg.com with your order number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I grade Japanese Pokémon cards?

Yes. Japanese cards are graded regularly, and CGC grades Pokémon cards in all languages. Check the service details for any card type limits before booking.

Can I grade sealed booster packs?

Yes. PSA booster pack grading authenticates and grades sealed packs. See PSA grading.

Can I get a slab replaced if it's scratched or cracked?

Yes. PSA and Beckett reholder services replace the holder without changing the grade.

Do I need to clean my cards first?

Never use liquids or chemicals. A gentle wipe with a clean microfibre cloth to remove dust or fingerprints is enough. Handle cards by the edges.
